Tinidazole

Tinidazole is an antibiotic medicine that is classified as a nitroimidazole drug. Tinidazole works to treat bacterial and protozoal infections in the body. Tinidazole is most often used to treat parasitic infections (amebiasis, giardiasis), infections in the intestines, infections in the vagina (trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis), as well as sexually transmitted diseases. Tinidazole is not effective in treating viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.

Take Tinidazole orally with food. Contact your doctor for the precise instructions that apply to you. Dosage of this medication may change during treatment depending on the severity of your condition and the progression of your illness.

Inform your doctor and surgeon that you are taking this medication before you go in for any surgical procedure or medical test. Do not stop taking this medication without first speaking to your doctor, as suddenly halting treatment may worsen your condition.

Always read the ingredients before taking this or any other medication to ensure that there are no elements that may elicit an allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following side-effects associated with an allergic reaction: hives, shortness of breath, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face.

The most common side effects associated with Tinidazole include:

• Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
• Constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach
• Unusual taste in the mouth
• Fatigue, dizzy feeling.

Contact a doctor or pharmacist if these side effects persist, worsen or become unbearable.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

• Severe dizzy or spinning feeling (vertigo)
• Disorientation
• Accelerated heart rate
• Tingling feeling in the arms or legs
• Fever, sore throat or other flu like symptoms
• White patches in the mouth
• Yeast infection, unusual vaginal discharge
• Seizures

Before taking Tinidazole, consult your doctor if you have a history of any of the following medical conditions:

• Kidney disease
• Liver problems
• Blood disease
• Disorders in the brain or nervous system (including seizures)
• Untreated infections (including yeast or fungal infections)

Avoid drinking alcohol 3 days prior or post Tinidazole treatment.

Take caution while driving and avoid operating heavy machinery while taking this medication.

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or plan on becoming pregnant before taking this medication.

Always read the ingredients before taking this or any other medication to ensure that there are no elements that may elicit an allergic reaction. Tell your doctor if you allergic to metronidazole before taking Tinidazole.

Do not combine Tinidazole directly with colestipol or cholestyramine. Have 2 hours intervals between these treatments.

Do not combine disulfiram with this medication. Wait 2 weeks after your last dosage of Tinidazole before reintroducing disulfiram to your treatment plan.

Contact your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications before adding Tinidazole to your treatment plan:

• blood thinners (including warfarin)
• azole antifungal medications
• St. John's wort
• anti-seizure medications
• cimetidine
• lithium
• fluorouracil
• tacrolimus
• cyclosporine
• oxytetracycline
• phenobarbital
• fosphenytoin
• carbamazepine
• phenytoin

Always inform your doctor of any medications you are taking (including vitamins, herbal supplements, and over the counter medications) before embarking on a new treatment. Additional medications not listen here may interact negatively with your medication.

Do not take more than your recommended dosage. Take missed doses as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next treatment.

Keep Tinidazole in a cool, dry place away from heat and moisture. Dispose of any unused medication past the point of expiry. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
