- Uses
Flagyl (Metronidazole) is used for treatment of infections caused by parasites in the small intestine, amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess, trichomonas vaginal infections, bacterial vaginosis, as well as to treat trichomonas carriers of both sexes who haven't developed the symptoms of the infection yet.
The medication can be used alone or along with other antibiotics for treatment of liver, pelvis, abdomen and brain abscesses caused by bacteria, as well as colon infections and Helicobacter pylori, which is a primary reason of intestinal ulcers. - How to take
Generic Flagyl should be taken according to the instructions of your doctor and directions on the prescription label. Do not change the dosage or period of use without prior medical consult.
Swallow the pill without chewing or crashing it to avoid rapid release of a big amount of drug. - Side effects
DO NOT use the medication if you are allergic to it. If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Contact a medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: numbness of hands or feet; painful urination; white patches and sores on your lips or inside your mouth; bloody or watery diarrhea; eye pain, sight problems and increased sensitivity to light; reduced concentration, behavioral changes; muscle twitching and tremors, convulsions; nausea and vomiting; sleepiness; fever, chills and sore throat; red or purple skin rash spreading in the face and upper body with blistering and peeling; swollen face and tongue.
Note that this list does not include all possible side effects. Other side effects might occur depending on individual health conditions. - Precautions
Do not combine Generic Flagyl with alcohol and avoid drinking three days after you complete the course, as it may lead to unpleasant side effects such as skin redness, tingly sensation, nausea and vomiting. Check labels of products you consume to make sure they do not contain alcohol.
If you have diarrhea, it might be the sign of a new infection. In this case, stop taking Generic Flagyl and contact your doctor immediately. Do not take any diarrhea medications unless prescribed to. - Drug interactions
Notify your doctor about other medications you are taking, especially cimetidine (Tagamet), blood thinners such as warfarin (Jantoven, Coumadin), disulfiram (Antabuse), lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, etc.), seizure medications such as phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton) or phenytoin (Dilantin).
Other drugs may interact with Generic Flagyl as well. - Missed dose
If you have missed your dose of Generic Flagyl, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.

Generic Flagyl should be stored at temperatures below 77° F (25° C) away from heat and light.
