Avodart (Generic)
Avodart (Dutasteride) is a medication used to treat enlarging prostate. The prostate gland is a part of the male reproductive system, which is responsible for sexual function. If taken regularly, Avodart decreases the size of the prostate, cures urination irregularities and lowers the chances of surgical involvement.
Also marketed as Avidart, Duagen, Avolve, Duprost, Tridesun and Dutasteride.

- Uses
Avodart is used to treat the condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia by suppressing the production of hormone responsible for prostate growth. It can also improve urine flow by reducing the blockage.
- How to take
Avodart should be taken once a day on a regular basis during meals or otherwise. Swallow the pill without crashing or chewing it. The time of taking the medication should be fixed. Patients notice improvement 3 to 6 months into the course.
- Side effects
DO not use the medication if you are allergic to it. If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue, rash, etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.
Common side effects of taking Avodart include: increased size and tenderness of breasts; lack of sex drive; difficulty keeping erection. - Precautions
As Avodart is a medication prescribed strictly to men and absorbed through skin, children and women (especially pregnant women) should avoid contact with it. In case of accidental contact, the exposed area should be washed with water and soap.
- Drug interactions
Avodart may interact with other medications such as: ciprofloxacin, diltiazem, cimetidine, macrolide, antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin,) propranolol, cyclosporine, protease inhibitors (e.g., indinavir, saquinavir, ritonavir) and verapamil.
- Missed dose
If you have missed your dose of Avodart, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.
- Storage
Avodart should be permanently stored at 77°F (25°C) away from moisture and light (do not store in a bathroom cabinet). However, temporary storage at 59°F - 86°F (15°C - 30°C) is permitted. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
