Generic Requip is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist which activates dopamine receptors when natural dopamine levels are unusually low or non-existent. It is prescribed to patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease or Restless Leg Syndrome.
- How to take
Follow your doctor’s exact instructions when taking Generic Requip. Do not take more or less than directed. Follow the directions of your prescription label.
Important: The dosage and timing of Generic Requip for Parkinson’s disease patients and those with RLS is different.
It is possible you will receive a Generic Requip starter’s kit, where each pill is marked with the day you should take it on. It is crucial you take these pills exactly on the specified day since each contains different amounts of the medicine. The pills must be taken in correct order so that you gradually receive higher doses of the medication.
When your Generic Requip dose changes, you may experience a temporary increase in side effects. You may take Generic Requip with or without food; however, taking it with food can decrease the side effect of nausea.
It is possible you will have to take Generic Requip for several weeks or months until you start noticing improvement in your symptoms. For best results, continue taking Generic Requip as directed by your doctor. DO NOT stop taking this medicine or change the dosage suddenly. If you do, you risk having withdrawal symptoms including disorientation and confusion, fever or muscle stiffness. Talk to your doctor about the medicine’s withdrawal symptoms. - Side effects
Seek immediate emergency help if you show any of the following allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, tongue, lips or throat; hives; breathing difficulty.
If any of the following serious side effects occurs, contact your doctor immediately:
- Confusion, fever, muscle stiffness, fast or irregular heart rate
- Hallucinations
- Tremors
- Feeling like you are about to faint
- Difficulty breathing and tightening in chest
Call your doctor at once if you find yourself falling asleep during daily activities, or if you faint, or if you experience hallucinations.
Milder side effects of Generic Requip include:
- Vomiting, mild nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
- Sweating, dryness in the mouth
- Drowsiness, dizziness
- Worse RLS symptoms early in the morning
- Insomnia
- Anxiety and/or agitation

You should not take Generic Requip if you are allergic to mirtazapine or if you are also taking tryptophan (L-tryptophan). DO NOT take Generic Requip if you are currently taking or have taken an MAO inhibitor such as furazolidone (Furoxone), isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days.Fatal side effects could occur if you take Generic Requip before letting an MAO inhibitor completely clear out from your body.
As with some antidepressant drugs, you may experience suicidal thoughts when you start taking Generic Requip. This is more common among patients under 24 years old.
Before taking Generic Requip, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:- Epilepsy or seizures
- Bipolar disorder
- Liver or kidney disease
- Heart disease and/or angina in the chest
- Low blood pressure or dizziness when standing up quickly
- History of heart attacks or strokes
- History of drug abuse
- History of having suicidal thoughts
- Drug interactions
You should not take Generic Requip if you are allergic to mirtazapine or if you are also taking tryptophan (L-tryptophan).
